The purpose of the Significant Tree Advisory
Committee is to advise Council and make recommendations on
the designation of significant trees for inclusion in the
Tree Preservation Bylaw due to their importance to the community,
including importance for heritage or landmark value or as
wildlife habitat.
The Significant Tree Advisory Committee will, consistent
with the purpose described above, undertake the following:
- Research, investigate and compile an inventory of significant
trees (heritage, landmark or wildlife habitat) in Saanich
and make recommendations to Council on the designation
of significant trees pursuant to Section 8 of the Tree
Preservation Bylaw No. 7632 and its successors.
- Promote public awareness of significant trees and encourage
measures to preserve, protect, maintain and care for designated
trees.
- Provide grants to owners of significant trees for the
purpose of assisting in hazard abatement pruning, and
improvements to preserve/maintain the health of the tree
or preservation of tree form.
- Assist in the organization of the annual Tree Appreciation
Day planting event.
Agendas & Minutes
The Committee will meet a minimum of four times per year
in accordance with its regular schedule of meetings established
annually at the first meeting of the year. No meetings are
held during the summer and winter breaks (July, August and
December). Special meetings may be held at the call of the
Chair. The meeting rules and procedures will be in accordance
with the Council Procedure Bylaw.
The Committee will consist of seven (7) community representatives
appointed by the Council. The Committee will elect a Chair
from among its members.
The Parks and Recreation Department is the primary contact
and will provide the required professional support. The Legislative
Division will provide secretarial and administrative support.
