Saanich Archives acquires archival and reference material in the following ways:

  • Through transfer of corporate records from the Municipality of Saanich

Recently, staff discovered a box of mystery photograph albums in our holdings.  Research has revealed that they relate to the Oates family, Saanich pioneers about whom little is known.  The images have been scanned and are available to view on our website.

Saanich Archives staff recently discovered a box of glass plate negatives in our holdings relating to the Sehl family, who were well known in the Victoria German and music communities.  The images include family portraits, the family home on Wark Street, swimming, boating at Brentwood Bay, Naval officers, Goldstream, and vehicles.  All of the images have been scanned and are available to view on our website.

Accession consists of a scrapbook of news clippings and ephemera compiled by J.R. Carmichael, Municipal Clerk from 1908-1913. News clipping subjects include Edinburgh and Scotland in general, the British Royal family, poetry, politics, and Greater Victoria and Saanich news. Scrapbook also includes handwritten notes by J.R. Carmichael, as well as sketched house plans.
