Recent Acquisitions

Saanich Archives acquires archival and reference material in the following ways:

  • Through transfer of corporate records from the Municipality of Saanich
  • Through donation of private records from families and individuals in the community
  • Through purchase of reference books and other material on local history

John Dean's Cabin Diary book cover Reference Book Collection John Dean's cabin diary: Illahie, Mount Newton, 1895 & 1906-1937, by Jarrett Thomas Teague, 2009. This is the Illahie saga, the whole story as written by John Dean, from the property purchase to its transfer.  This book captures every diary entry concerning Mr. Dean's time with Mount Newton. Lansdowne Era book cover Reference Book Collection The Lansdowne Era: Victoria College, 1946-1963, edited by Edward B. Harvey, 2008.  Published for the University of Victoria, this book discusses the evolution of the educational institution from college to university during a time of "major economic, demographic, and social changes".  Individual chapters have been contributed by Victoria College alumni. Staff, Gordon Head Junior High School, 1962 Gordon Head Jr. High School Collection Class and staff photographs from Gordon Head Junior High School, 1961-1963.  Included are two school yearbooks from the same time period.

Ernest Salisbury (on airplane), Lansdowne Airfield Askey fonds Photographs relating to the Askey and Fieldhouse families, and to the Carey area.  New photographs have been added to the fonds and are available for viewing online.  Included in the recent donations are photographs of Lansdowne Airfield, and class photographs from McKenzie Avenue School (1945-6, 1948).

William Pridmore, BC Race Walking Champion Pridmore Family fonds Research material on Pridmore geneology including copies of death and marriage certificates, ephemera from World War II including a War Service certificate from the Municipality of Saanich to Peter Pridmore, newspaper clippings, and photographs of the Pridmore, Bugslag, and Atkins families [ca. 1870 to 1945].  All photographs are now available for viewing online.

Annie Girling

Annie Girling Photographic fonds

More than 1,000 glass plate and film negatives of Saanich and Victoria taken from 1912 to the 1940s by amateur photographer Annie Girling.  Included in the donation is Annie's 1901 Instantograph field camera for quarter-plate glass negatives, together with her plate holders and printing frames.
