Saanich Archives is exhibiting the honour roll, and the service uniform and personal effects of its artist and creator RG Rice. Also on display are photographs, documents and artifacts telling the stories of Saanich families and their experiences during the First World War. The exhibit is on now until January 31 in the Cube Case and Main Floor Gallery at the Municipal Hall, 770 Vernon Avenue.
Like most communities across Canada, Saanich was deeply affected by World War One. In 1916, Saanich Council passed a motion to create a roll of honour in recognition of the municipality’s men and women who served overseas in the war.
January 5, 2017 marked the 100th anniversary of the unveiling of Saanich’s First World War Honour Roll.
